After India, Bangladesh is the largest producer of jute. Unfortunately, it is largely sold in bulk, without much added value. However, jute is a strong, valuable fibre from which high-quality products can indeed be made. That is exactly what the company Classical Handmade Products does.
Entrepreneur Tauhid of Classical Handmade Products (CHP) had a dream 15 years ago to make high-quality products from jute and other natural fibres in northern Bangladesh. Not in the big city of Dhaka, where much of the textile industry has gathered, but in the rural north. Close to the poor rural population who could earn an income this way. WITHOUT tearing families apart to do so: because that is what happens in the textile industry, where father or mother leave for long periods to work in the big city. Meanwhile, Tauhid's dream has come true and CHP has customers all over the world who buy the beautiful baskets and rugs. And a total of about 5,000 people are employed. These are both home and factory workers, mostly women.
CHP is an accredited member of the World Fair Trade Organisation.
