A poor country like Burkina Faso has few products it can export. The main products are gold and cotton. Production of these comes with social and environmental problems. Fortunately, companies like Anatrans (cashew nuts) and Timini (dried mango) are exporting clean, valuable products on a large scale, thus contributing to sustainable economic development. Timini is responding to the growing demand in Western countries for healthy snacks. The naturally sweet, organic mango fits very well into that range.
Timini buys mango from more than 4,000 small-scale farmers who know they are guaranteed to sell their product, year after year, to this company at a good price. The beauty is that farmers can sell the best mangoes fresh, as an export product, and the lower quality to Timini. Because the product is dried, it is less of a problem if a mango has a spot. Thus, the most value is extracted from the mango trees and the farmer's income is maximised. In addition, Timini also provides many employment opportunities. In the peak season, more than 1,000 people are employed at the factory.
